The Los Angeles Unified School District plans to reopen preschools and elementary schools for in-person instruction by April 9th.
Superintendent Austin Beutner says safety is still the number one priority. Beutner believes elementary school classrooms can reopen in the spring if at least 25% of employees in various positions are vaccinated. The teachers' union would have to agree to the reopening plan first, even though it may not mean enough employees getting vaccinated in time. L.A. County educators will be eligible for their shots on March 1st.
Meanwhile, the LAUSD will reopen some in-person services for students with special needs next week. This will end a hard shutdown of all campuses that has been in place since early December.
