The state of California today announcing the largest ever state tax rebate in U.S. history.
Governor Gavin Newsom says because of a $75 billion budget surplus, the state is sending checks to more than three quarters of California tax payers. People making up to $75,000 will receive a check of $600. $500 more will go to qualifying families with dependents. Newsom says he will have to work out details with lawmakers.
The package also includes $5.2 billion for rental assistance and $2 billion to help people catch up on utility payments.
