California's troubled Employment Development Department is again making news this morning after several reports found the backlog of unpaid and unresolved claims now tops one million.
The EDD backlog consists of two major components: claims that have taken more than 21 days for a resolution or payment and claims that are awaiting certification as the first step of the benefits process. This hold up continues as the economy struggles to rebound from the pandemic. According to The Mercury News, unemployment claims in California remain greatly elevated from where they were prior to business shutdowns that started in March 2020 to combat the spread of the coronavirus.
