Preliminary Sacramento Police Budget Discussions

City leaders are considering changes to law enforcement funding ahead of next month's vote on Sacramento's budget.

The Sacramento City Council considered additions to the police department at yesterday's meeting, like new body cameras and five new officer positions in the Professional Standards Unit. Some community members are advocating to defund the department, using parts of its nearly $166 million budget, an increase of nearly $10 million from last year, on community-based projects, like housing, health-and-human services, or parks-and-recreation. According to KCRA, the additional funds, if approved, would cover the cost of five new officers, three patrol vehicles and a 3.5% raise that officers got in December from their union contract.

The City Council is set to vote on the budget next month, preparing to end the fiscal year.
