San Francisco officials are investigating the attack of an Asian police officer in Chinatown. The suspect, later identified as Gerardo Contreras, is in custody in connection with the attack, but officials are not ready to say if the attack was a hate crime. A female officer confronted Contreras after making threats towards people in the area - witnesses say he was screaming racial slurs about Asians.
The suspect then reportedly started to attack the officer. Other people jumped in to help the officer until backup arrived. According to Newsweek, the officer sustained only minor injuries, including a bloody nose.
