- A Northern California college professor is accused of starting a series of arson fires in remote forested areas of Northern California near the massive Dixie Fire. Gary Stephen Maynard was arrested Saturday following an investigation that began on July 20th. Maynard, is believed to have worked at a number of colleges in California, including Santa Clara University and Sonoma State University, where he is listed as a lecturer in criminal justice studies specializing in criminal justice, cults and deviant behavior.
- The Sacramento City Council has unanimously voted to move forward with a massive plan to address homelessness in Sacramento. The plan will establish 20 temporary Safe Ground shelter sites, which include campsites and tiny homes. Mayor Darrell Steinberg said the city's plan to address homeless is not meant as a cure to the problem. The plan calls for $100 million over two years. The source of funding has not been finalized.
- Governor Newsom is expected to order all school employees in California to either be vaccinated or submit to regular testing. Newsom has announced a similar policy for state workers and healthcare workers. The governor is expected to make the announcement at an Alameda County elementary school today.
- This morning the Sacramento Bee is reporting that farm irrigation agency in San Joaquin Valley is accused of stealing water. Federal investigators say between 2009 and 2015, the Panoche Water District illegally took more than 17 million gallons of water, enough water for 106,000 households for a year. The district has been ordered to pay the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation $7.5 million in compensation.
