- Evacuation orders and warnings hit South Lake Tahoe and the remaining Lake Tahoe Basin on Sunday night after a challenging weekend for crews battling the Caldor Fire. Since the Caldor Fire first erupted nearly two weeks ago, the blaze has devoured nearly 168,000 acres, and as of Saturday evening remained only 13% contained.
- The Department of Defense identified the sergeant over the weekend as 23-year-old Nicole L. Gee from Roseville. She was one of 13 service members killed while supporting Operation Freedom's Sentinel. Just days before her death, Gee posted a photo on Instagram of herself in uniform holding a baby in Kabul saying , "I love my job."
- A federal judge has rejected a lawsuit that claimed the recall of Governor Gavin Newsom is unconstitutional. The lawsuit centered on the recall’s two-question ballot. The ballots asks voters whether Newsom should be recalled, and if so, who should replace him. The plaintiffs argued those questions violate the constitutional principle of “one person, one vote,” saying Newsom’s critics get two choices while his supporters have only one. But, The judge ruled voters do not have to vote for a replacement candidate, so it does not violate "one person, one vote."
- The damages from Tropical Storm Ida are expected to pile on today across southern Louisiana, southern Mississippi and southern Alabama. More people near New Orleans are being told to move to higher ground as floor warnings are issues amid massive power outages. Power could be out for days or even weeks. Hurricane Ida knocked out a major tower that powers most of Orleans and Jefferson parishes into the Mississippi River. The tower carries all eight transmission lines that bring electricity to nearly a million homes and businesses.
