With fresh powder on the ground, some ski resorts in Tahoe are opening early this year.

Palisades Tahoe announced it moved up its opening date from November 24th to this Friday, October 29th. It's only the third time in the resort's 72-year history that it will be opening in October. Face masks will be required indoors only for those who are not vaccinated against COVID-19. This comes after the latest storm dumped three-and-a-half feet of snow on Palisades' upper mountains. Atmospheric rivers that have doused the Bay Area with heavy rains have brought nearly 4 feet of snow to the Central Sierra mountains this month, a near-record for October snowfall.

Opening before Halloween weekend marks “one of the earliest openings in the resort’s history,” the resort said in an announcement. The last time the ski areas opened this early “with comparable terrain” was 2004, the resort said in its announcement. Most of Tahoe’s other resorts plan to open in mid November or early December.
