WATCH: Explosions, Fire At SMUD Substation In Downtown Sacramento

Downtown Sacramento was rocked Tuesday by explosions and a fire that started on top of the Old Folsom Powerhouse at 7th and H Street. The Sacramento Fire Department confirms the interior fire has since been contained and crews are there now assessing the damage. This all unfolding just before 11:30 Tuesday morning. The building that caught fire is part of a substation that is owned and operated by SMUD. Reports say that about 6 blocks surrounding the substation have lost power, including the public library that has since closed. Residents in nearby apartment buildings have been evacuated as crews inspect those structures.

H through G streets near 6th Street are closed for fire and police. Fire crews advise those driving in the area be extra cautious of traffic lights that might be out. Sacramento Regional Transit says those who rely on Light Rail going into or out of Downtown should find an alternate routes and the trains will not be traveling in the area for the time being.

The Old Folsom Powerhouse is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and was constructed back in 1894. SMUD has been the owner and operators of the building since the 1940's.
