Sac Metro Chamber President/ CEO Amanda Blackwood on Homeless Resolutions

Listen: Sacramento Metro Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Amanda Blackwood.on the homeless situation in Sacramento.

The Sacramento City Council voted to keep enforcing parking rules that affect homeless people. In a 6-to-3 vote, the Council rejected a plea from Mayor Darrell Steinberg and two others to stop towing or citing vehicles where homeless people are living. Under intense pressure from businesses in Sacramento, the enforcement rules will continue.

However, a new resolution on homeless encampment enforcement was presented and adopted at the Sacramento City Council meeting on Tuesday, December 14, 2021 (with a 6:3 vote) that will result in receiving weekly updates on the progression of the Comprehensive Siting Plan. Furthermore, the resolution identifies the time between now and March 15, 2022, be used to design transparent solutions that address the needs of the community and of business. These discussions will be led by Councilmember Jay Schenirer and Amanda Blackwood, who will work with regional partners, including Sacramento County to identify and make operational sites for safe parking, shelter, and other homeless housing options.
