Representative Jerry McNerney is retiring, making him the 28th Democrat who will not seek reelection this year.

McNerney, who represents the Stockton area, announced that he will not be running again in 2022. McNerney is one of many Democrats who have been announcing their retirement in the wake of redistricting, including Representatives.Alan Lowenthal, Jackie Speier, Lucille Roybal-Allard and Karen Bass. McNerney was first elected to his Sacramento-area seat in 2012 and currently sits on the House Committee on Energy and Commerce. “I am grateful for the love and support of my family, who have been by my side throughout this journey. I could not have done this without them,” McNerney wrote. “I will keep working for the people of my district throughout the remainder of my term and look forward to new opportunities to continue to serve.”

Representative Josh Harder (D) is expected to run in the redrawn district instead, previously aiming for the 13th District, which opens up the midterm map for California.
