A school board members recall measure is a success in San Francisco's special election.

The Chronicle reports that by a wide margin yesterday voters chose to get rid of school board President Gabriela Lopez and board members Alison Collins and Gaauuga Molida. In a statement, Mayor London Breed said the election result shows that community members want the city's public schools to "focus on the essentials of delivering a well-run school system above all else." Recall organizers say the school board's decision not to have kids return to the classroom after the COVID-19 shutdown was unacceptable to many parents which led them to push for the recall vote. Supervisor Hillary Ronen said she wasn’t surprised by the results. “We faced the hardest time of our entire lives as parents and as students in public schools and this Board of Education focused on issues that weren’t about dealing with the immediate crisis of the day, and they didn’t show the leadership that that was necessary and that parents needed to hear, and that kids needed to hear,” said Ronen.

More than 70% of voters supported the recall of the board members, according to preliminary results from the San Francisco Department of Elections. Mayor London Breed will be naming their temporary replacements.
