This morning state health officials say they will lift vaccine and testing requirements for major indoor events on April 1st.

The announcement comes a month after the state lifted its indoor mask mandate. Operators of major indoor events will still be encouraged to screen guests because the threat of COVID-19 and new variants will continue. “These recommendations will continue to be updated as CDPH continues to assess conditions on an ongoing basis,” officials wrote. “California must be vigilant to maintain situational awareness through surveillance and be ready to pause or reinstate a higher level of protective mitigation recommendations or requirements.”

Since the mask mandate has been lifted indoors in California, it is still strongly recommended while in public. Masking is now only mandatory in medical or health sensitive areas such as healthcare settings, nursing homes, homeless shelters, jails, prisons and emergency shelters. A federal order requiring masks to be worn on public transportation, including planes and buses, also remains in effect through at least April 18. Starting this week, students and teachers across the state have been given the option to take their masks off in class.
