Sonoma State President Stepping Down Amidst Sexual Harassment Scandal

Judy Sakaki stepping down as Sonoma State University president in the midst of a sexual harassment scandal.

Sonoma State President Judy Sakaki announced her official resignation amid sexual harassment and retaliation allegations against her and her husband on Monday. Her resignation follows published reports revealing California State University paid $600,000 to former provost, Lisa Vollendorf, after she reported allegations of sexual harassment involving Sakaki’s husband, Patrick McCallum. Vollendorf had initially reported to the chancellor’s office that several women had also accused McCallum of unwanted touching and sexual comments, according to the LA Times. The university originally released a statement saying the “claims are without basis.”

Sakaki said working as president has been an honor in a press release announcing her resignation. “After thoughtful reflection and discussions with my family, I made the decision to step away as president of this wonderful campus,” Sakaki said. “I care deeply about Sonoma State and believe this choice will allow the campus community to move forward in a timely manner.” Sakaki expressed gratitude to the North Bay and the university for “the opportunity to serve during such a challenging and transformative time at Sonoma State.”
