The Grateful Chair, a Multimedia Exhibit at the Pence Gallery in Davis

Melinda Welsh, the founding editor of the Sacramento News & Review, was diagnosed with a rare and aggressive cancer in 2014. It rapidly moved to a terminal diagnosis. Today she's alive and well, and has been cancer free since 2018. She wrote about her plight extensively for the Los Angeles Times; her cover story for Sactown won a Folio Award.

Her spouse Dave Webb is an iPhone artist; he responded to cancer with the grateful chair. Part love note, part meditation on mortality and part unsolicited advice, the grateful chair is an art exhibit that features a multimedia video installation, 50+ iPhone images printed on metal, and referent objects. The exhibit, Webb's sixth, premiered in Tracy in March of 2023, followed by an exhibition in Southern California last October. Webb was the first marketing director at both the Mondavi Center for the Arts and the Harris Center for the Arts.

The grateful chair runs to November 1 in The Pence Gallery, 212 D Street, Davis Admission is free. Opening reception is October 11, 6-9 pm. Artist's talk on October 27 from 2-3:30 pm.
