Some bars and clubs would be allowed to serve alcohol a lot later than they do now under the latest attempt to change the statewide 2:00 A.M. cut-off.
The new bill's sponsor, California State Senator Scott Wiener (D-San Francisco) says leaving it up to individual communities to decide whether some places would be allowed to keep pouring booze as late as 4:00 A.M. would provide flexibility, and that could also mean more money-making opportunities.

Sacramento Police Sergeant Bryce Heinlein says this proposed change to California law would have a significant effect on some of their enforcement teams working around bar schedules. "You are adding two hours drinking past the normal 2:00 a.m., so there is the potential of people drinking longer, drinking," added Heinlein. "That's always going to be a concern of ours."
Wiener's immediate predecessor from San Francisco tried a similar bill, but that one didn't make it out of committee.
