"We are still in shock and are grieving the loss of our beloved Janet."

One of Mejia's roommates, who is in his mid-20s, is considered a person of interest.  Investigators say he had gun in his possession when the found him and the coroner's autopsy report says Mejia's had been shot.  He reportedly has been arrested on weapon charge not related to the Mejia murder.

The family said in the statement that the GoFundMe account that had been set up to help in the search will now be turned in a funeral expense account.

Statement from the Mejia family:  On behalf of the Mejia family, we would like to thank all of the friends and family who have expressed their condolences upon the loss of our treasured sister, daughter and friend, Janet Mejia. We would also like to extend our deepest gratitude to the Sacramento and Stockton communities for the outpouring of support at this most difficult time; from the social media posts, to the calls, donations to the GoFundMe account, and posting of flyers, we cannot express how much this support gave us the strength to continue searching for Janet.

The outcome of this search was not one we could have been prepared for.

We find solace in knowing that we had the opportunity to know and love Janet. She was a beautiful and selfless person who brought joy to our lives and who touched the lives of many others.

We would also like to thank the Sacramento Sheriff’s Department and law enforcement for their ongoing work on this investigation. Your unrelenting efforts helped deliver Janet to her family, and we have no doubt that your efforts will help bring justice for Janet’s death.

We know the investigation is still ongoing and we ask that the public cooperate and come forward with any information that could help bring finality to this investigation.

We respectfully ask that that at this time, we not be contacted concerning the investigation. We are still in shock and are grieving the loss of our beloved Janet.

We welcome and appreciate any donations that can help our family get through this unexpected loss. Donations will be used to cover the expenses of the funeral and burial arrangements.

Janet will live in our hearts forever. We thank you for your help and prayers during this difficult time.
