At a State Capitol demonstration of a drugged driving traffic stop, police chiefs and legislators talked about the growing problem of driving on drugs, which coincides with an increase in opioid use and expanding pot legalization.

So, Republican Assemblyman and former CHP officer Tom Lackey is leading a bi-partisan group that wants to come up with a limit like Washington and Colorado's 5-nanogram THC limit for weed, but until then, Democratic Senator Jerry Hill has bills to bridge the gap until the science catches up. "Many people in California look at it and say, 'if you can't scientifically prove it, we're not going to do it,'" Hill said, "even though Colorado and other states have defended it in court."

Hill's two measures would make it an infraction to smoke pot while driving, same as it is for drinking, and if you fall slightly below the legal limit for alcohol but also test positive for weed or other drugs.
