Saturday morning September 16th, hundreds of volunteers will fan out across the American River Parkway to clean up one of Sacramento's jewels. And there's still time for you to get involved.
The Great American River Cleanup kicks of at 9 o'clock on Saturday at 22 sites up and down the river. Volunteers will get a safety briefing before heading out to collect and estimated 16 thousand pounds of trash.
“We encourage people to be there by 9am for the safety talk and the cleanup will last Saturday the 16th from nine to noon,” says Dianna Poggetto, executive director of the American River Parkway Foundation.
She says as the summer winds down, many things have fallen out of rafts as people enjoyed the river over the past few months. “We also have a number of volunteers that will be on the water in kayaks as well as divers. They will picking up all kinds of probably sunglasses, keys, bottles from the riverbed.”
1800 volunteers are on board for the cleanup but organizers are hoping to reach 2000 by Saturday morning. Poggetto says if you show up at a site which is already closed you will not be turned away.
