Teacher Unions Opposed to Arming Educators

Arming school teachers is among the options being discussed in hopes of ending mass shooting tragedies like the one in Florida last week, but teachers union's across the country are expressing opposition to the idea.

Sacramento City Teachers Association Vice President Nikki Milevsky says teachers are highly trained in educating students - not in the use of weapons.

“It takes ongoing training to be prepared to use a weapon in a crisis situation,” said Milevsky.

A school psychologist and mother of two students, she believes talk of arming teachers is diverting attention from the real issues.

“It’s a problem regarding mental health support.  It’s a problem regarding easy access to weapons that can do a lot of damage in a very short period of time,” Milevsky added.

American Federation of Teachers President Randi Weingarten says teachers don't want to be armed, they want to teach.

“No amount of training can prepare an armed teacher to go up against an AR-15.”
