Sacramento Police Department New Policy On Muting Body Cams

Sacramento Police are under orders to keep their body cameras and their microphones on.

The order stems from complaints about officers muting their microphones after the shooting death of Stephon Clark last month.

On Monday, the department got a memo saying "officers shall not deactivate or mute their body worn cameras until the investigative or enforcement activity involving a member of the public has concluded."

However, it does allow temporary muting while officers are speaking with doctors or nurses to protect medical privacy or if a crime victim refuses to speak about "sensitive circumstances," such as sexual assault.
