California Becomes First State To End Bail Before Trial

Governor Jerry Brown has signed the Bail Reform Act into law. Beginning on October 1, 2019, the flight risk of defendants will be assessed.

Most misdemeanor arrests would result in the accused being released from jail after booking on his or her own recognizance.

In high flight risk cases, the defendant would have his or her case reviewed by the court and could be held in "preventive detention" until trial.
