City Of Sacramento Will Provide Free Child Care For First Responder Parents

Sacramento city leaders are taking action to help first responders, medical professionals, and critical city staff during the COVID-19 outbreak by providing free child care services if needed. Starting Monday, March 23, there will be 350 openings for children ages 5 through 12 available at eight community centers throughout the city. This childcare program will be administered by the City's Youth, Parks & Community Enrichment Department.

Children will be kept in separate groups of ten or less, and those groups will be allowed to intermingle. The caregivers are licensed and background-checked personnel who normally work in the City’s 4th "R" and START programs, according to City Councilwoman Angelique Ashby.

Parents who wish to enroll their children in the program can register online at https://apm.activecommunities.com/cityofsacparksandrec/Home. Once you're at the site, search under Essential Worker Child Care to select your preferred daycare location. You'll have to present identification on Monday showing that you fall into one of three categories: City of Sacramento first responders, front-line health care workers who work in the City of Sacramento; or essential City of Sacramento employees.

The centers will be open from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., with a ratio of one caregiver for every 10 children.  The City’s community centers are currently closed, but eight of them will reopen for this project.

Centers that will offer childcare include Sam Pannell; Belle Cooledge; George Sim; Oak Park; Coloma; Hart; Joe Mims Jr.; Hagginwood; and South Natomas.
