Sacramento's John Sutter Statue Vandalized For Checkered Past

Historic landmarks are being torn down and removed all across the country. In Sacramento, the statue of John Sutter at Sutter’s Fort State Historic Park has been vandalized. Sutter has long been believed to be one of the founders of Sacramento. KFBK's Amanda Carroll investigated John Sutter's past to determine the motivation behind the vandalism.

Who is John Sutter

Editorial Note: While some historians reference one of John Sutter's contemporaries, Heinrich Lienhard, when proclaiming Sutter to be a racist and abusive toward Native American people, their perspective is not universal. It should be noted that historical evidence reportedly exists showing that Leinhard's accounts may have been tainted by a dislike for Sutter, and that the man whose name appears prominently throughout Northern California actually paid indigenous workers for their labor and treated them fairly.
