Sacramento County Not Ready To Vaccinate 65 & Above Group

Governor Gavin Newsom announced on Wednesday, January 13, that California would be expanding their COVID-19 vaccine eligibility. All Californias age 65 and above are now eligible to receive the vaccine.

"There is no higher priority than efficiently and equitably distributing these vaccines as quickly as possible to those who face the gravest consequences," said Governor Newsom in his statement.

However, health officials from Sacramento are saying that the county is not yet ready to administer COVID-19 vaccines to people 65 and older.

Each California county is responsible for its own vaccination rollout and people should look to their county health departments for information, reported KCRA3.

"Right now, we're really focusing on being able to get through the Phase 1A and then being able to look at Phase 1B, which will include all those over the age of 65," Dr. Olivia Kasirye, Sacramento County public health officer told KCRA3.

"And the other thing we're planning to do is definitely to make sure that we have more providers and more sites where people can go to get their vaccination," Kasirye continued.

It was announced that Sacramento County's Cal Expo would be used as a mass vaccination site open to the public.
