Every day, around 2,000 people under the age of 18 smoke their first cigarette, according to the CDC.
While people have known the scary statistics and realities for people who smoke daily, it's difficult for people to kick the habit.
Not only is smoking bad for your health, but a new WalletHub study shows smoking can also be bad for your finances.
The total economic cost of smoking in the U.S. adds up to more than $300 billion per year including medical care for adult smokers.
Depending on which state you live in, the cost of smoking varies. To help encourage smokers to work on quitting, WalletHub looked into how much smokers spend in each state.
So how much are smokers in California paying per year?
According to their findings, the out-of-pocket cost for smokers in California is $145,591 and the total cost for the state is $2,685,504 per year. Researchers ranked the state No. 42 overall, meaning it's on the more expensive side.

- Missouri
- Alabama
- North Carolina
- Tennessee
- Kentucky
- South Carolina
- Georgia
- Louisiana
- Idaho
