Sacramento Deputy & K-9 Killed In Shootout Near Cal Expo In Sacramento

A Sacramento county sheriff's deputy and his K-9 partner are dead, while another deputy remains hospitalized following a shootout last night near Cal Expo in Sacramento.

Sacramento County Sheriff Scott Jones says the suspect crashed his vehicle on the east side of Cal Expo near the horse racing track around 10 p.m. and refused to comply with deputies’ orders. The deputies' K-9 unit was deployed in an attempt to detain the suspect, at which time the suspect began shooting. Deputies returned fire, but the two deputies and K-9 were struck by the suspect’s gunfire. The suspect, one deputy, and the K-9 were killed in the skirmish. The second deputy is recovering at U.C. Davis Medical Center.

The fallen deputy is identified as 31 year old Adam Gibson, a six year veteran of the department and a Marine, having served two tours in Afghanistan. Gibson is survived by his wife, Rachel, and their infant daughter. K-9 Riley also died at the scene. K-9 Riley was five years old and had been in-service with the Sacramento County Sheriff's Office for three years.
