The officer that shot Daunte Wright and the police chief are resigning.
Brooklyn Center Mayor Mike Elliott made the announcement during a news conference yesterday, prompting outcry from community activists. He said Officer Kim Potter and Police Chief Tim Gannon are no longer with the department, and tried to address activists' concerns about what they say is ongoing violence against Black people.
According to Chief Tim Gannon of the Brooklyn Center Police Department, officers pulled Mr. Wright over on Sunday afternoon for a traffic violation related to expired registration tags. Officers then discovered that he had a warrant for his arrest. Through body cam footage released on Monday, it was shown that an officer pointed a handgun at Wright, following the car pulling away before the officer announcing he shot him on tape.
Wright's death sparked an outcry in Minneapolis, with police officers and demonstrators beginning to have physical altercations following peaceful vigils all over the county. National support for Wright and the Black Lives Matter movement has been increasing across the country.
