Why Some Sacramento Homeowners Are Being Required To Downsize Backyards

Some Sacramento homeowners recently received an unexpected letter from the city that's causing them concern.

One South Land Park couple, Ray and Kathy Hillier received a letter on Tuesday, May 4, from the city claiming that their backyard is sticking out twenty-one feet over the property line.

Their home is near where the new Del Rio Trail will be paved in the foreseeable future, according to CBS13.

The letter states that the couple will have to remove their fence, shed, and any other personal items in the space by July 31.

“It’s a lot of work to take all this down and they think he can do this by himself and he can’t,” Kathy told CBS13. “It’s not going to happen. Are they going to build the trail right away? I have no idea. We weren’t warned about this ever."

Ray and Kathy aren't the only ones who were shocked to receive the letter from the city.

Several neighbors have received the same letter informing them that their fences stick out too far.

Virgil Pierini told CBS13 the fences on two of his properties will have to be torn down to make room for the trail.

“I think it’s just a chicken thing to all of a sudden boom! We were told other encroachments were going to be grandfathered in,” said Pierini.

The trail will be a pedestrian and bike path spanning from the Sacramento River Parkway to the Freeport Shores Bike trail.

According to CBS13, some neighbors have plans to form a group and attempt to dispute the city's request.
