City Council Seeks Restraining Order For Newest Staffer Amid Controversy

After a controversial new hire made headlines for threatening comments against the Sacramento Mayor and City Manager, the city council is voting to seek a temporary restraining order. The newest staffer for Councilwoman Katie Valenzuela, Skylar Skyler Michel-Evleth (aka Skyler Henry), is the subject of the controversy after comments surfaced from his podcast "Voices: River City" saying another public official "should be terrified for the rest of [her] life". He went on to say “you should never be able to leave your house, if that is how you are going to use your position to govern. The same thing sort of applies with the mayor and city manager of this city."

The city council voted 8-to-1 in favor of the petition for the restraining order, which would also extend to city manager Howard Chan's wife and children. Lawyers representing the City are asking for the order to take effect before Michel-Evleth's first day of work, barring him from interacting with other City employees. In a press release from the City, it states that Michel-Evleth "advocated physical harassment of public officials with whom he disagrees" saying the decision to request this order hinged on a single issue - "the legal and moral obligation of the City to provide it's employees with a safe and secure environment." The statement also explains that the hiring decisions are made by each council member individually and that the restraining order is the only course of action to protect the rest of the city staff.

Michel-Evleth was notified of the restraining order on Tuesday after the vote, posting is reaction in a thread to Twitter. He later posted a letter in which he claims he sent to Mayor Steinberg and City Manager Chan.
