The University of California health system may cut their ties with catholic hospitals over the next two years.

UC regents have voted to possibly end their partnership religion-based hospitals that restrict access to abortion and gender-affirmation procedures in the future. But that decision could be reversed if catholic hospitals remove their restrictions on abortion and in vitro fertilization by 2023. According to the Sacramento Bee, the vote by the UC Board of Regents followed activism among pro-choice and LGBTQ advocacy groups to limit the publicly run health system’s partnerships with Catholic hospitals, which they say disproportionately discriminate against marginalized communities.

Under a new policy passed by the UC Board of Regents Wednesday, hospitals that restrict care must still inform UC patients on all the available healthcare options and provide a referral if the hospital does not offer that care.
