On Thursday, July 1, California scheduled a date for Governor Gavin Newsom's recall election, reports AP.
The recall election is set for September 14, 2021.
The election was prompted by a political uprising driven by frustrations around the state's handling of the COVID-19 pandemic. Restrictions and state orders closed schools, shut down businesses, and left many unemployed in an attempt to stop the spread of the deadly virus.
The date for the recall election was set by Lt. Gov. Eleni Kounalakis, Democrat, after election officials certified that enough valid signatures on the petition had been returned to qualify the recall election for the ballot.
The grassroots campaign has been working throughout the year and announced they had reached 1.95 million signatures on their petition back in March. 1.5 million signatures are needed to place the recall on the ballot.
Newsom's campaign issued a statement calling the election "a naked attempt by Trump Republicans to grab control in California."
This isn't California's first recall election. In 2003, the unpopular Democrat Gray Davis was recalled and replaced by Republic Arnold Schwarzenegger.
On Thursday, the state Finance Department announced that the state and county costs to run the recall election are estimated to be $276 million.
