- There is a new plan to turn part of Cal Expo into a homeless campus, which could serve more homeless individuals than traditional shelters and provide residents with on-site services. Homeless individuals camping along the areas of the American River Parkway with a high risk of fire would receive first priority to get into the shelter. Although the project is supported by Governor Gavin Newsom, and the money needed to build such a campus is already included in the city's budget, approval from the Sacramento City Council, County Board of Supervisors and Cal Expo’s board of directors is still needed.
- Tens of thousands of music fans from across the nation and the globe are descending on Sacramento for the Aftershock Festival. Visit Sacramento's Mike Testa estimates this music festival will have an economic impact just south of $30 million for Sac and the surrounding areas.
- Caltrans is temporarily closing down three mountain passes in the Sierra Nevada starting Thursday afternoon. The National Weather Service is calling for rain in the higher elevations, and that could create some hazardous driving conditions. Caltrans says State Route 4 over Ebbetts Pass, State Route 89 over Monitor Pass, and State Route 108 over the Sonora Pass will all close between noon and 2:00 p.m. Officials say they will reevaluate the condition of the roadways on Saturday and then decide whether to reopen.
- The San Francisco Giants have their opponent set for the NLDS and it is a familiar rival. The Giants will play the Los Angeles Dodgers in a five-game series after the Dodgers beat the St. Louis Cardinals last night in the wildcard game. It was a historic regular season for both teams as the Giants and the Dodgers finished with the first and second best records respectively in all of Major League Baseball. This will be the first time these two teams have faced off in the playoffs in this longtime rivalry. Game one will be tomorrow night in San Francisco.
