Classrooms were emptier Wednesday at Nevada Union High School and by Thursday morning the school had to close. Students showed up but many of the teachers were marked absent. The teacher absences come after the Nevada Union Joint High School District board voted to end indoor mask enforcement Tuesday. District Superintendent Brett McFadden said refusal to comply to the mandate by students and parents and the ability to enforce the mandate had become "untenable." In a statement, Nevada Joint Union High School Teachers Association President Eric Mayer said they're upset about "the violation of the contract and the collective bargaining process." Meanwhile, the school's principal Kelly Rhoden said this in a letter to families, "It is our top priority to get students back in the classroom to further their education as soon as possible. We will be working closely with the teachers union and the district administration to find a quick resolution to our current situation.We apologize for the inconvenience and thank you for your patience and support as we work through these challenges."
