Highway 50 Closed This Morning In The Sierra Due To Boulder

This morning highway 50 is closed in both directions in the Sierra as crews continue to work to break up a bolder in the road.

US-50 is shut down in both directions due to massive boulder in the middle of the highway following a rock slide early this morning. As of now being reported from Caltrans, Eastbound US-50 closed at Sly Park Rd. & westbound US-50 are closed at SR-89 Jct. Construction and road crews have been drilling holes into the boulder before blasting the rock into manageable pieces since late in the night, and Caltrans is estimating a time of reopening for this afternoon around 2pm today.

Snow and rain is also expected in the area this afternoon, and right now motorists are being informed and re-routed to avoid the damage. Anyone on the roads can use Highways 49, 88, 89 as alternates in the immediate area, the CHP and Caltrans said, or travel to the Sierra via Interstate 80.
