  4. Madera County has been without a hospital since January, leaving the 160,000 residents, most of whom are farm workers, without access to emergency healthcare. The now abandoned Madera Community Hospital shuttered after negotiations with a large health care system to buy the hospital fell through in late December, forcing the hospital into bankruptcy.
