A Minnesota state senator was arrested after she was found inside a home in Detroit Lakes, Minnesota, on Monday (April 22). Authorities said they received a 911 call from the homeowner around 4:45 a.m. and found Democratic Senator Nicole Mitchell inside the home. She was taken to Becker County Jail, where she is being held on a burglary charge.
The Star Tribune reported that Mitchell's stepmother and her late father lived on the block in 2022.
The Becker County Attorney's Office is reviewing the case and will decide whether to file charges against her.
Officials did not release additional details about the case.
" Knowing very few details at this time, I am shocked by the news of Sen. Nicole Mitchell's arrest for first-degree burglary. The public expects Legislators to meet a high standard of conduct. As information comes out, we expect the consequences to meet the actions, both in the court of law, and in her role at the legislature," Senate Minority Leader Mark Johnson said in a statement.
Mitchell is still serving her first term as senator following her election in 2022.
