Cal Expo Laying Off Over Half Their Workers Due To COVID-19 Pandemic

Over half of the employees at Cal Expo in Sacramento are reportedly being laid off as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic in California.

Cal Expo officials cite mounting financial losses due the cancellation of various events planned at the facility, including the California State Fair itself. Since Cal Expo doesn't receive any state funding, they rely on revenue from events like the fair.

Chief Executive Rick Pickering sent a memo to his employees last week in which he wrote, “(the) event industry, including Cal Expo, has been decimated." He also told them their no way to predict when paid events might be scheduled again. He did promise to pay their salary and medical benefits through November 12th fo this year.

The exact number of employees being let go isn't clear, since the layoffs are considered a confidential personnel matter that can't be made public. Cal Expo has approximately 75 full-time employees.
