I received an email from Catherine in Galt. She owns a grocery store and said her garbage rates went from $485 per month to over $3,500 monthly with very little warning. Her story is something you could see in other cities around California.
Catherine sent me copies of her recent bills. They show the huge increase which occurred after the City of Galt entered into a new contract for garbage collection services with Cal-Waste. It is a 12-year contract with additional increases to come. Business leaders said the sizable increases seemed to catch city leaders by surprise as well.
Galt Mayor Paige Lampson responded by saying the previous city manager did not make the volunteer council aware of the before and after numbers, so they had no idea how much of an increase businesses were facing.
Lampson added that while the contract with Cal-Waste is pretty iron clad, the company is at least talking with city officials about what might be done to provide relief to business customers. Lampson also noted that residential rates are going up.
Cal-Waste was contacted about the situation but did not immediately respond.
