For years Redding, California, native Ryan O'Callaghan kept a part of his life secret from most of the world. It wasn't until 2017 that he publicly acknowledged he is gay. He says he even chose to play football to keep his secret safe and, in a new book, reveals his plans for suicide when his career was over.
Following a successful college football career at UC Berkeley O'Callaghan play in the National Football League for the New England Patriots and the Kansas City Chiefs, but his life began to spiral downward to point where he considering ending it all.
O'Callaghan sat down for a one-on-one interview with Cristina Mendonsa to talk about what happened and how he turned things around. O'Callaghan's book, My Life on the Line: How the NFL Damn Near Killed Me and Ended Up Saving My Life, comes out September 3rd.
