I'm a new husband and a new dad. I'm still getting the hang of both. I've done a few things right, and a lot of things wrong. But, it's still early days, so I hope to improve my learning curve.
Last weekend my kids (twins), celebrated their birthday. According to my wife, it was my idea to have the party at our house. I don't quite remember how I phrased it, but the kids jumped on the idea, and so the party planning began.
Now, you should know I'm a bit anal retentive when it comes to our house. I like things in their place, and clean, and we try to take good care of what we've acquired since we were married a year ago. I'm learning with kids, that's not often easy (or possible). So I have to admit I was a little nervous at having a dozen 9, 10 and 11 year old children running around inside, hyped up on sugar (especially since rain was in the forecast).
Well, I'm happy to report that I handled the two hours better than even my wife probably thought I would. The kids were pretty well behaved, very polite, nothing was damaged, and the rain held off, so we were able to play most of the games outdoors.
Two hours might not sound like a lot to those of you who have raised a kid, or have been in parent mode for years...but for me, this was the equivalent of "One small step for Dan, one giant step for mankind" in my new world.
