I've come to the point where I want to cancel my subscription to the Sac Bee, but I LOVE reading a newspaper on the weekend. I'm tired of talking to "customer service" experts who tell me my business is important to them, but sound like robots reading off a script when my paper is late.
The paper is a sliver of what it once was, then last week, I get a notice telling me they're increasing the cost of my subscription! I asked them "Why are you doing this, what am I getting in return?" I was told it was "production costs, and the high taxes in California." So basically, I'm not getting anything.
What's frustrating is that so much of the news is dated. Stories that appear on Sunday are often a day or two old, I've read them on-line or talked about them on the radio.
At one time I loved the travel and arts sections, but honestly, it seems there are more pages in the Sunday local section devoted to obits than news. I know I'm sounding like that cynical old guy who yells at kids to get off his grass, but I just don't see the return on my investment anymore.
Maybe I'll subscribe to the San Francisco Chronicle, or Wall Street Journal? I occasionally subscribe to several newspapers from the UK, and feel like I get more bang for my buck, even paying a higher postage rate.
In the meantime, I'd like to get your thoughts. Is the new price hike at Sac Bee worth it? Will you pay the extra, or get your news elsewhere?
