Nancy Pelosi Asks President Trump To Reschedule The State Of The Union

U.S. President Donald J. Trump delivers the State of the Union address in the chamber of the U.S. House of Representatives

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has asked President Donald Trump to reschedule the State of the Union address due to the ongoing government shutdown. Pelosi said that the January 29th address should be postponed or delivered in writing due to security concerns. The Secret Service, which is in charge of securing major events such as the State of the Union, is one of the government agencies impacted by the partial government shutdown.

“Sadly, given the security concerns and unless government re-opens this week, I suggest that we work together to determine another suitable date after government has re-opened for this address or for you to consider delivering your State of the Union address in writing to the Congress on January 29th,” Pelosi wrote in a letter to Trump.

The partial government shutdown has been going on since December 22nd and there is no end in sight. The president is demanding nearly six billion dollars to fund a wall on the U.S.-Mexico border and re-open the government, something the Democrats are refusing to give him. The House has passed multiple bills to reopen the government, but the Republican-controlled Senate has not brought them to the floor because Trump has said he will veto them.
