A California Highway Patrol motorcycle officer and a 49-year-old driver who were both stopped on the side of Interstate 80 in Fairfield were killed Friday morning.
The accident happened around 9 a.m. on westbound Interstate 80 at Menlo Campos, or North Texas Street.
Officer Kirk Griess was conducting a traffic stop with a Saturn SUV pulled on the right shoulder when a Chevorlet pickup truck veered over for unknown reasons and hit Griess and a 49-year-old man named Jaime Bueza Manuel of Vallejo.
Bay Area news crews captured footage with two damaged vehicles and the CHP's motorcycle, completely damaged.
46-year-old Griess and Manuel were taken to a hospital where they were both pronounced dead.
The CHP says the driver who hit Griess and Manuel was also taken to the hospital was being questioned by investigators.
Griess was a 19-year veteran of the CHP and had worked at the CHP Solano Office for the past 16 years. He was a veteran of the Marine Corps. and is survived by a wife, two daughter, ages 25 and 21, and a 14-year-old son, the department says.
