San Francisco County could become one of the first place in the U.S. to house a facility where addicts could use drugs more safely.
If passed by Governor Jerry Brown, Assembly Bill 186 would allow the city by the bay to open a permitted safe injection site staffed with medical professionals who could treat and prevent overdoses.
Drug users could go to the facility to use while being supervised. This would likely help to prevent the spread of diseases like HIV in addition to avoiding overdoses.
Treatment options and other services would be offered by staff to anyone interested.
Similar policies have recently been introduced in Maryland, Massachusetts and New York.
A broader bill with the same mission failed to pass last year.
