Two people have died after of an early morning crash on Highway 99 in Sutter County near the city of Nicolaus.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the incident happened around 6 a.m. Monday at Sacramento Avenue and Highway 99 when a big rig that was traveling northbound swerved into the southbound lane and collided with an pickup truck carrying four people.
Two of the pickup's passengers were killed and the other two were taken to the hospital, but are expected to be OK.
Investigators are looking into why the big rig driver drifted into oncoming traffic.
The southbound lanes of Highway 99 were closed off for a short period of time, but have since reopened, according to Caltrans.
