Sacramento CHP Officer Delivers Baby On Freeway

The side of a Sacramento freeway turned into a maternity ward during a traffic stop just after 4:30 in the afternoon on January 7.

California Highway Patrol officer Jeff Lloyd was involved in a traffic stop on the Fruitridge Road off-ramp from Highway 99 when a gray SUV pulled up by his department cruiser.  Lloyd walked over to the SUV and started talking with a woman in the front passenger seat.  She quickly told him that she was in labor and about to give birth.

CHP Officer Jeff Lloyd holds the baby he help to deliver on the side a Sacramento freeway.

Lloyd radioed for medical assistance, then he went back to the SUV to comfort the expectant mother.  However, before assistance could arrive Lloyd had to deliver the newborn baby on his own. "He carefully unwrapped the umbilical cord from the baby’s head and made sure both mother and baby were stable," according to CHP officials.

The mother and her healthy baby daughter were taken to a local hospital.  Both mother and daughter are resting at a local hospital.
