Placer County Shooting Spree Suspect Identified

The Placer County Sheriff's Department has identified the person who went on a shooting spree earlier this week in rural Placer County.  48-year old Stanley Stepanski III, of Florence, Montana was killed in a shootout with police after crashing his car on interstate 80 near the highway 65 exit.

Earlier Tuesday, 93-year-old Mary Toste died after being hit by gunfire inside her Penryn home.  A second person was also hit by gunfire in Loomis, but was able to get medical attention and is recovering.  A police K-9 was injured but is expected to make a full recovery.

Sheriff's department officials said despite rumors, Stepansky III has no known connection to any of the victims or the area at this time.
