On Monday California State Assembly and Senate leaders welcomed former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords and Peter Ambler, Executive Director of the Giffords Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence, to discuss the Legislature’s efforts to address gun violence and mass shootings in California.
Giffords and Ambler came to Sacramento to provide an update on the Giffords Law Center ’s priorities for preventing gun violence in California. Assembly and Senate leaders will discuss new legislative efforts to reduce gun violence and strengthen California’s gun policies.
In January of 2011 Giffords was holding a meeting, called "Congress on Your Corner," in the parking lot of a Tucson, Arizona Safeway store when Jared Lee Loughner drew a pistol and shot her in the head before proceeding to fire on other people. In all, Loughner shot 19 people before sheriff's deputies were able to subdue him. Six of the people shot on that day died.
Giffords has been a strong proponent for stronger gun laws ever since her recovery from the incident.
