A proposed bill that would require full-day kindergarten is making its way through the California Legislature. Assembly Bill 197 would require kindergarten be the same number of minutes per day required of first graders beginning in 2021. Supporters say they want to see all children get the right start from birth by receiving high-quality childcare, preschool and kindergarten. Meanwhile, opponents believe children will learn what they need at their own pace without a mandate.
